In contemporary urban spaces, where ‘greening’ is increasingly prevalent, street trees and indoor houseplants are functionally utilised and objectified as infrastructure for maintaining and regulating the landscape. Whilst we are surrounded by greenery, might we not be unconsciously redefining our relationship with these plants—not as ‘plants as living organisms’, but as ‘part of the urban system’?
This work is an interactive installation that visualises in real time the weak bioelectric potentials emitted by a living houseplant (rubber tree) in response to physical contact and environmental changes. Changes in the surroundings or a viewer touching the leaves trigger electrical potentials within the plant, causing paired leaves on a 3D model to repeatedly deform and converge. Through physical and visual interactions with plants—which we normally do not consciously notice—I hope viewers will experience the vital connections between ‘humans and plants’ and ‘the environment and plants’.
